Salinas City Elementary School District- PBIS

Organization Description

From our district's beginning with 9 students in a house, we have grown to almost 9000 students and 800 staff members at 14 elementary schools.

MISSION

The Mission of the Salinas City Elementary School District is to provide a well-rounded education with multiple opportunities for all students’ success.

VISION

We expect all children to be at or above grade level.

Program Information

The intern will collaborate with the PBIS Coach and district staff to promote and support a positive school climate and culture within our TK-6 school district, serving the families of Salinas. This includes social emotional learning, mental health and behavior support for teachers and staff.

The Salinas City Elementary School District was one of the first in the county implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS.) Our district has continued to grow our practices and we now have 14 schools receiving state recognition and 13 of those are platinum, the highest level. This is because connection and belonging remain a focus of our district. Each site has PBIS teams that support the work at their site. Site teams plan events, track behavior and intervention data as well as support teachers with understanding the importance of relationships, routines, class circles/meetings, restorative practices and Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process.

Intern will participate in site and district meetings and events, as well as assisting teachers and students with social-emotional and behavioral needs. This may involve facilitating class meetings, PBIS/MTSS team meetings, and working closely with teachers, administrators, psychologists, counselors, and other behavioral and social-emotional support staff. The intern will also work with the district chronic absentee team to help identify barriers and solutions to chronic absenteeism. Additionally, the intern will collaborate with community partners who provide services for students and contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism and enhancing school engagement.

Intern should have a collaborative spirit, clear communication and basic computer skills and knowledge of Google Suite

The intern will work directly with the Pupil Personnel Dept as well as with most other departments in the district. We work closely with special education, counselors, sites and ed services. There are also times during the year we work closely with the IT department and Data and Assessment department. This role will give you a glance into different departments at SCESD seeing how we are all interconnected and work together for the benefit of our students.

Health & Safety

All service learning students will be required to have a TB test and Fingerprinting prior to starting their service hours.

The intern is responsible for all costs for district requirements. Our district requires: TB testing, fingerprints, Live Scan, background investigation, etc. The fingerprints, Live Scan and background are all done through the Post Box on Acacia Street right across from the district office in the same parking lot. We have a form that is given to the intern and they take it to the Post Box. They then return the signed form to Becky Nelson and she is responsible to turn it into the HR department. Results are sent directly to SCESD within a couple of weeks or less. The TB test should be done asap at the place of choice of the intern, prior to the beginning of service. Results are to be turned into Becky Nelson as well. A cover letter and resume are also required prior to an interview.
