Position Overview:
We are seeking passionate and dedicated college students to join our team as Summer Reading Program Camp Assistant Interns. As an intern, you will play a crucial role in assisting with the implementation, and facilitation of our summer reading camp program. This internship offers valuable hands-on experience in education, curriculum implementation, and working with children in a dynamic and collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in engaging children in lesson plans and activities focused on literacy enrichment.
- Support camp instructors in delivering interactive reading sessions and literacy-based games.
- Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to camp participants as needed.
- Help maintain a positive and inclusive camp environment conducive to learning and growth.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance tracking, materials preparation, and organizing camp logistics.
- Collaborate with fellow interns and staff to ensure the smooth operation of the program.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a college or university program, pursuing a degree in education, child development, English, Public Health or a related field.
- A passion for teaching is desired, but not required.
- Passionate about promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading among children.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of children and adults.
- Reliable, responsible, and able to follow directions.
- Previous experience working with children in educational or recreational settings is preferred but not required.
- Must be available to commit to the full duration of the summer reading camp program.

Tasks:
1. Literacy Instruction Support:
o Task: Assist summer reading camp staff in preparing materials and resources for literacy activities, ensuring they are organized and accessible for use.
o Project: Create a resource guide for summer reading camp staff, highlighting effective literacy instruction techniques and strategies for supporting struggling readers.
o Assignment: Collaborate with summer reading camp coordinator to plan and implement a literacy-themed workshop for campers, incorporating hands-on activities and interactive learning experiences.
2. Child Engagement and Management:
o Task: Lead a group activity focused on promoting literacy skills while keeping campers engaged and motivated.
o Project: Develop a behavior management plan outlining strategies for addressing common behavioral challenges in a positive and supportive manner.
o Assignment: Reflect on experiences interacting with campers, identifying successful engagement techniques and areas for improvement.
3. Cultural Competence:
o Task: Incorporate diverse literature and cultural activities into camp programming to celebrate cultural diversity and promote inclusivity.
o Project: Organize a multicultural event or celebration, featuring activities, and music from different cultures represented within the camp community.
o Assignment: Reflect on experiences interacting with campers from diverse backgrounds, exploring personal biases and cultural competence development.
Training:
- 1. Literacy Instruction Support:
- Training Method: On-the-job Training and Modeling
- Description: The intern will receive hands-on training while assisting staff with literacy instruction. They will observe modeling effective literacy strategies and gradually practice implementing these techniques themselves, receiving feedback and guidance from mentors during the first week of the internship.
- Training will be on campus from May 27th-30th from 8am-1pm at the Hazel Miller Croy Reading Center.
2. Child Engagement and Management:
o Training Method: On-the-job Training and Modeling
o Description: The intern will receive hands-on training during interactions with campers, including managing group dynamics and addressing behavioral issues. They will focus on positive behavior management techniques and strategies for engaging children in literacy activities.
3. Cultural Competence:
o Training Method: Cross-cultural Experiences
o Description: The intern will engage in cross-cultural experiences, such as multicultural storytelling sessions or cultural celebrations, to deepen their understanding of cultural differences and promote inclusivity within the reading camp.
Learning Outcome:
1. Literacy Instruction Support: The student will support literacy instruction by assisting staff with the implementation of literacy strategies, providing one-on-one or small group support to campers, and facilitating literacy-related games and activities.
2. Child Engagement and Management: Through interaction with campers, the student will develop skills in engaging children in literacy-related activities, managing group dynamics, and addressing behavioral issues in a positive and supportive manner.
3. Cultural Competence: Working with campers from diverse backgrounds, the student will develop cultural competence and sensitivity, creating an inclusive environment that respects and celebrates cultural differences.
Note:
The Center is located in Richmond Park, which is not rated as the safest neighborhood in Fullerton. We have never had an incident, and all our interns and clients are never left alone. The area is well-lit, and we have 24-hour police surveillance cameras installed outside our center.
