Moulton Museum InternAt — Moulton Museum

Opportunity Summary

Moulton Museum offers internships for academic credit. We provide historical research, arts management, education, curatorial, archive, events and marketing training. Students can enroll in one to three credits. We offer a stipend to accepted interns. Please ask your academic advisor for more information. Please send us your application here: https://moultonmuseum.org/volunteer.

Students who are focusing on Arts Management and/or Writing will help develop exhibits and complementary public programs. This includes exhibits in our fine art Nellie Gallery and in our main Moulton Museum historical artifact display. Public programs should complement exhibit content and could be made in collaboration with Chapman University, LCAD, Laguna Playhouse, Laguna Art Museum, and the historical societies.

Our Education committee includes developing curriculum that aligns with California Social Studies Standards. We work with the Orange County Docent League to align our tours with state and local standards. Interns will be asked to create lesson plans and select primary sources for our local classrooms. You can help fabricate learning tools from 3D artifacts to coloring pages.

Our Curatorial department works closely with the collections. They work as a committee to research thematic exhibitions and select appropriate artifacts for display from the collection. If you are a Researcher, you will help us find primary sources for our next exhibition. Help us with data entry by creating metadata and enhancing the searchabily of our archival records. If you like digitizing records, we have flatbed scanners to process collections. We write the labels, fabricate design, and install the displays. Help us collaborate with the docents who educate our community in the gallery.

Tasks:

Interns will be focused on one of the above committees and will be required to produce, by the end of the internship, a product that will be presented to the Moulton Museum Board for consideration. Tasks during the internship will be assigned by the executive director and will include reading, presenting draft material, meeting with volunteers and visitors, and working with outside vendors and contractors. Exhibits, social media campaigns, educational documents, and research profiles crafted by interns will be implemented by the Moulton Museum after Board approval.

Training:

The intern will have a weekly meeting. We have committee meetings with department leads who provide feedback on each project. Students collaborate with Google Docs and learn how to use Canva.

Learning Outcome:

“Working at the Moulton Museum is a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable knowledge of how museums operate. Museum Directors, Jennifer Keil and Cindy Keil, give students the chance to test their skills in curating, archiving, art history, and much more. I walked away from my internship at the Moulton Museum with a new perspective and appreciation for how museums bring exhibits to life for the community to enjoy.” - Alexis Silva, Historian
