Here's how a HSE Intern contributes to our team:

 

• Monitors and assists with implementation of project HSE plan and regulatory requirements.

• Assists in conducting and identifying when project-specific training is required, which may include weekly training topics, hazard specific training, and the HSE Operating Procedure (HSEOP).

• Participates in and provides information for HSE meetings based on direction provided.

• Provides project team with project-specific information and statistics to develop trends and assists with the creation of trend action plans.

• Assists with the development and implementation of Hazard ID tools (e.g., Construction Hazard Assessment (CHA), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Pre-job Safety Instruction (PSI)). Evaluates for completeness and follows up where appropriate.

• Conducts and documents project HSE inspections.

• Verifies that corrective actions are implemented.

• Assists with identification and monitoring of appropriate site Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

• Assists project management and supervision with the implementation of the emergency response plan.

• Assists with the implementation and monitoring of the environmental plan.

• Participates in environmental inspections.

• Gathers, reviews, and provides input on trade documentation.

• Monitors trade contractor safety compliance.

• Verifies that equipment and tool inspections are being conducted and documented as per the program.

• Notifies project management and direct supervision of any incident and assists with the investigation.

• Monitors work injury and ensures modified work is followed and properly documented (Completed by workplace health coordinator in Industrial).

• Assists in the implementation, monitoring, and support of the project’s HSE Plan, HSEOPs, safe work practices, and any other HSE-related practices.

• Develops and maintains strong customer focused relationships with all stakeholders.

Tasks:

The following is a summary of your responsibilities during the internship:
• Assist with the development, implementation, and revisions of the Project Specific HSE Plan.
• Assist with the development of safe work practices and job hazard analyses (JHA).
• Have a working knowledge of PCL's HSE policies, practices, and procedures.
• Perform one formal HSE work site inspection per week, at a minimum with documentation.
• Assist with providing information to personnel regarding applicable regulatory requirements.
• Assist with monitoring the use of personal protective equipment requirements.
• Assist with worker orientations.
• Assist with implementation and monitoring of the Pre-Job Safety Instruction Program (PSI).
• Assist with the development and communication of statistical HSE information.
• Report health, safety, and environmental infractions.
• Monitor and document the implementation of required corrective measures.
• Assist with the investigation and documentation of health, safety, and environmental incidents.
• Assist with the review of HSE reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Assist with the preparation, implementation, and communication of site emergency procedures.
• Conduct JHA and PSI audits in the field with assistance from PCL operations personnel.
• Assist in the implementation and monitoring of HSE program compliance and effectiveness.
• Assist with project training.
• Assist with Safety Management Center (SMC) data entry.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Week #1
Participate in project HSE orientation and receive an overview of the project scope. Introduction to PCL and subcontractor trade workers. Introduction and familiarization with PCL corporate and district policies and procedures, 2H filing system, SMC, PCL Connects, and the HSE team site.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate how to give and verify orientations for new workers. Be able to explain safety policies to other employees. Identify where to locate safety resources on the project.

Week #2
Review HSE inspection procedure. Participate in SMC online and face-to-face training. Learn how to enter data in SMC. Introduction to Quick 5 cards and receive the first Quick 5 assignment to be completed in two weeks. Introduction to PSI and JHA audits.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate how to use SMC and how to recognize and correct existing hazards.

Week #3
Participate in project HSE committee meetings. Complete Global Harmonization System (GHS) eLearning on PCL Connects. Update the project Safety Data Sheet (SDS) list. Complete Quick 5 card assignment.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate understanding of GHS requirements.

Week #4
Develop and present job site training topics at the weekly HSE field meeting. Create JHA including reviews and revisions of existing JHAs. Review Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing (MEP) phases on projects, including practices and procedures as taught by the PCL MEP team. Receive assignment for Quick 5 card to be completed in two weeks.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate verbal communication skills and hazard assessment procedures. Discuss the MEP phases on a construction site.

Week #5
Participate in district HSE committee meetings. Review required HSE documents from our sub trades.

Learning objectives: Identify what documents are required from trades prior to starting on site.

Week #6
Review near miss reporting and submission process. Review lifesaving absolutes at the weekly HSE field meeting. Receive assignment for Quick 5 card to be completed in two weeks.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate how to investigate near miss and incidents including SMC entry.

Week #7
Prepare project deliverables and accompany the District HSE manager to other projects to assist in grading.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate understanding of district monthly and HSE manual requirements.

Week #8
Create a PowerPoint for a training on a relevant topic for the project and present training to the project team. Receive assignment for Quick 5 card to be completed in two weeks.

Learning objectives: Develop and present training materials to peers.

Week #9
Lead the weekly team safety walk. Identify hazards and positive observations.

Learning objectives: Demonstrate knowledge of the PCL HSE program and skills learned during internship.

Week #10
Finalize your end of internship presentation and complete any open assignments.

Learning Objective: To review what was learned and to evaluate the overall experience.

Final Presentation
At the end of your internship, you will prepare a five-minute presentation on your internship to district management.

The overall goal of your internship is to add to your knowledge and experience and prepare you for a career as an HSE professional. Your main objective is to become more familiar with construction safety as well as strengthen your professional skills and interpersonal relationships in professional settings. Together, we will develop goals and objectives to assist with learning and personal objectives and routinely review your goals and objectives to ensure we are meeting your personal plan to help you grow as an HSE professional.
