Opportunity Summary 

The museum seeks students interested in public history and cultural preservation and interpretation to assist in the organization and care of its library, archive, object collections and exhibits.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will acquire essential skills related to the acceptance and acknowledgement of donations; the processing of new items into the collection through the creation of condition reports and cataloging; the organization of collections and archival materials and their interpretation; the basic preservation of these items (stabilization, encapsulation, boxing, shelving or positioning in exhibits); the creation of inventory reports; the physical dismantling of exhibits and the creation of new exhibits and interpretive text; some research in library, archival and online sources may also be a part of this process.

Opportunity Training 

On-site training consisting of an initial orientation to the storage and conservation spaces and the collections database: 2-3 hours Ongoing training done weekly to assist interns in honing their skills and focus - 1-2 hours

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Interns should be clothed professionally and comfortably. Sturdy shoes are recommended, or at least no open-toed footwear. When occasion requires, gloves will be provided for the handling of sensitive material.
