Communications Volunteer InternAt — Office of Senator Tom Umberg
In a learner capacity and under the direct supervision of the District Director, the District Intern will be responsible for general office duties including monitoring and responding to the public inbox for the Member and assisting with social media and marketing projects. Applicants must be organized, detailed, and able to work well with others.
Tasks:
Under the supervision of the District Director:
- Student will assist with developing and responding to constituent communications. This includes crafting letters, emails, and conducting applicable bill research.
- Student will work with Senate Communications Staff to develop, edit, and format monthly newsletter to constituents
- Student will work with Senate District Staff to create, edit, and schedule social media content
Training:
Training will consist of the following:
- Intern onboarding and orientation
- One on one meetings
- Shadowing with Senate Communications Staff
- Hands on experience with review of all project submissions
Learning Outcome:
By the end of their internship, the student will:
1. Develop a deeper understanding of communications and operations within the State Senate
2. The student will learn to work in a cross-team environment working with both capitol and district staff needs
3. The student will learn best practices to develop newsletters and respond to constituent communications
4. The student will learn be able to execute basic approaches to issue research and analysis
