Behavior TechnicianAt — Center for Autism and Related Disorders
Implement ABA Treatment Plans with Fidelity:
After completing initial training and 90 days of work, the Behavior Technician will be able to accurately implement individualized ABA treatment plans designed by a BCBA, including skill acquisition programs (e.g., teaching communication or play skills) and behavior reduction protocols (e.g., managing challenging behaviors like tantrums), ensuring consistent application of techniques such as prompting, reinforcement, and data collection.
Collect and Analyze Behavioral Data Effectively:
The Behavior Technician will learn to collect, record, and summarize behavioral data during sessions (e.g., frequency of target behaviors, prompt levels), using tools like the iPad app mentioned in prior contexts, and interpret this data to track client progress, enabling them to provide meaningful updates to the BCBA and parents.
Use Safe and Appropriate Behavior Management Techniques:
Within 90 days, the Behavior Technician will be able to safely manage challenging behaviors by applying CARD’s prescribed handling procedures, such as quick body movements to block or redirect, while maintaining client safety and dignity, as outlined in behavior intervention plans.
Training:
Initial Training (Weeks 1-3):
Overview: CARD provides 2-3 weeks of comprehensive paid training to prepare Behavior Technicians for working with clients, even if they have no prior experience.
Components:
Didactic Training (Classroom-Based): 1-2 weeks of structured sessions covering ABA fundamentals (e.g., reinforcement, prompting, data collection), CARD-specific protocols, and behavior management techniques (e.g., safe handling for challenging behaviors). Includes lectures, videos, and quizzes.
Hands-On Practice: Role-play scenarios with trainers or peers to practice implementing ABA techniques, such as running skill acquisition programs (e.g., teaching communication) and managing behaviors (e.g., blocking tantrums).
Shadowing: Observe experienced Behavior Technicians or BCBAs during live sessions with clients to see how techniques are applied in real settings.
Duration: 40-60 hours total, depending on part-time or full-time status.
Assessment: Trainees must pass a competency checklist (e.g., demonstrating prompting, data collection) before working independently with clients.
Learning Outcome:
