Science Laboratory InternAt — Cal Poly Pomona - Human Performance Lab
At the CPP Human Performance Research Lab, interns gain hands-on experience in cutting-edge research focused on optimizing health, performance, and recovery across a wide range of populations. You’ll work alongside faculty and graduate students using the latest tools in exercise science, nutrition, and technology—applying classroom knowledge to real-world projects that bridge science and practice. It’s an ideal opportunity for students looking to build skills in research, data collection, and human performance testing while contributing to impactful work.
By the end of this internship, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate proficiency in human performance testing protocols, including assessments of strength, power, endurance, body composition, and metabolic function. 2. Apply foundational knowledge in exercise physiology, nutrition, and biomechanics to assist in the design and implementation of research studies. 3. Collect, manage, and analyze research data using laboratory equipment and software tools relevant to human performance science. 4. Critically evaluate scientific literature and contribute to discussions on the translation of research into practice. 5. Communicate scientific concepts and findings effectively, both orally and in writing, to peers, faculty, and community partners. 6. Demonstrate professional behavior, including teamwork, reliability, ethical conduct, and adherence to lab safety and data integrity standards.
General lab operations, operation of lab instruments, testing procedures, data analysis, test subject scheduling and communications. Length of training will vary but usually one semester.
Always follow supervisor instructions and never operate lab equipment without training. Keep work areas clean and wear closed-toe shoes. Obtain informed consent before testing participants and follow all IRB-approved protocols. Sanitize equipment before and after use. Know the locations of first aid kits, AED, and emergency exits. Report injuries or equipment malfunctions immediately. Maintain participant confidentiality and secure all data. For emergencies, call 911, then notify lab staff. Uphold professionalism, hygiene, and respect at all times while working in the lab.
