Writer's Assistant Academic InternshipAt — Joshua Salzberg

Opportunity Summary

For approximately 10 hours a week (or adjusted to meet 120 hour/semester requirement), the intern will read and discuss scripts being considered for rewrites or production by screenwriter and film producer Joshua Salzberg. The scripts will provide a basis for further instruction from Josh about screenwriting and producing. The internship will also cover the practical skill of writing script coverage, which is a requirement for most entry level film industry jobs. As opportunities are available, the intern will meet other professional filmmakers who are collaborating with Josh (directors, screenwriters, producers, etc). Josh will also provide direct feedback on the intern's personal projects or screenplays.

Given that the student lives outside of Los Angeles, most of the tasks will be able to be completed virtually via Zoom or phone meeting. Weekly in-person meetings at my office (West Hollywood) or a more convenient cafe location will be provided for additional one-on-one mentorship. Additional meetings with other professionals will be provided as available. None of the work will be done at my personal residence.

Tasks:

- read screenplays being considered for rewrite or production
- write 1 page coverage for screenplays in consideration
- discuss scripts in-person or remotely
- read and discuss Josh's film and tv pitches in development
- research potential partner production companies
- proofread scripts (less than 10 percent of time)

Training:

In addition to the training mentioned above, the student will meet with Josh for an initial orientation, weekly scheduled one-on-one meetings, and shadowing Josh at at least two meetings with filmmakers. Josh will give the student specific feedback on their writing to develop the following skills: outlining, screenplay structure, formatting, writing efficiency, character development, script editing, as well as writing and pitching strategies.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
- Identify the strengths and weaknesses of a screenplay and navigate that feedback professionally
- Network in a professional manner and create professional queries for job searches and screenwriting
- Write proficient professional script coverage
- Receive and implement screenplay notes from a producer
- Build a successful pitch for a feature / TV series
