Reporting InternAt — AfroLA

AfroLA is seeking a curious, motivated, and creative student intern to join our newsroom this summer. As an intern at AfroLA, you will have the opportunity to produce stories as written articles, audio, video, photography and social media content. This is a fantastic opportunity for students interested in expanding their skills across multimedia storytelling, solutions journalism or data reporting.

Tasks:

Throughout the internship, you will be guided and mentored by our editorial team, gaining experience and additions to your professional portfolio.

Responsibilities:
\u25cfProduce at least one in-depth news feature or multimedia story package, with support and guidance from the editorial team.
\u25cfComplete at least three smaller assignments (e.g. articles, social media video, photo essay, etc.).
\u25cfReport on issues impacting Los Angeles communities around issues including but not limited to health care, climate and sustainability, affordable housing and homelessness.
\u25cfConduct research, interviews, and fact-checking to support reporting and storytelling efforts.
\u25cfLearn and experiment with new journalistic skills such as creating data visualizations, analyzing datasets, and producing social media videos.
\u25cfParticipate in weekly check-ins with the internship manager to discuss progress on assignments, receive feedback, and set goals.
\u25cfCollaborate with team members, contributing to editorial brainstorming sessions and discussions.

Training:

General onboarding; weekly manager check-ins; dedicated staff mentor (aside from manager); collaborative work with other members of summer intern cohort.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will have had:
