Opportunity Summary 

Provide support to K-5 classroom teachers, CSUSM service learning students, and K-8 learners in math focused on improving one-on-one and small group tutoring/mentoring in math and K-8 student learning in mathematics.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Preparing CSUSM service learning students (who are non-math majors) to tutor K-8 learners needing extra help in math through: 1. special workshops/training sessions on math curriculum and intervention resources, best practices tutoring strategies and review of areas of greatest need in math: e.g. problem solving, number sense and deeper understanding of mathematical concepts 2. modeling effective tutorial practices 3. providing direct math tutoring/mentoring for K-8 students where needed 4. continuous monitoring of student progress in math in areas of greatest need to inform tutoring and interventions, as well as enrichment for advanced math learners. 5. on-going collaborative communication with service learning students, classroom teachers and coordinators to support tutoring mentoring. 6. acquire working knowledge of current research and best practices in math education, California State Math Framework and Common Core Standards and the computer based tests and performance tasks of the Smarter Balanced Assessment System (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress in math designed to measure student knowledge and skills and progress in mathematics

Opportunity Training 

Math Intern will receive on-going coaching/mentoring by a retired K-12 Assistant Superintendent of Instruction/Professor of Education . The International Baccalaureate (IB) Coordinator for the school site will offer an orientation and on-going coaching and supervision for the Math Intern. Mandated Reporter training is required and provided.
