CLA InternAt — San Diego Rescue Mission

Opportunity Summary

As a college student volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to serve in a variety of hands-on roles—from welcoming guests and preparing meals to assisting in donation sorting or leading enrichment activities. You’ll be part of a compassionate team committed to making a difference through love, service, and relationship. Whether you're looking to fulfill volunteer hours, gain real-world experience, or simply give back, this is a powerful way to grow while impacting lives.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Communication & Customer Service Skills: By interacting directly with guests, staff, and fellow volunteers, students will learn how to communicate with empathy, de-escalate situations calmly, and provide trauma-informed, respectful service. Team Collaboration: Volunteers work alongside a diverse team in a fast-paced environment, learning how to cooperate, lead when needed, and support others effectively. Leadership & Initiative: Students will grow in confidence as they take responsibility for tasks, adapt to changing needs, and help create a welcoming environment. Opportunities to step into leadership roles may be available for returning volunteers. Problem-Solving & Flexibility: Real-life challenges often arise in service settings. Students will learn how to think on their feet, adjust plans, and remain mission-focused under pressure. Cultural Awareness & Emotional Intelligence: Exposure to individuals from all walks of life will expand students' understanding of homelessness, addiction, trauma, and the barriers many face—fostering deeper empathy and perspective. Event & Logistics Support (if applicable): Some roles may include support with event setup, check-in, inventory management, or donation coordination—offering skills in planning and organization. Faith-Informed Service Experience (optional but relevant): Students will see how faith, compassion, and community come together to transform lives, and may grow in their own sense of purpose and calling.

Opportunity Training

All student volunteers will receive an orientation and on-site training designed to prepare them for meaningful, respectful, and trauma-informed service. Training includes: Mission Orientation – An overview of the San Diego Rescue Mission's values, history, and approach to serving those experiencing homelessness with dignity and compassion. Role-Specific Training – Hands-on instruction tailored to each student’s assigned area (e.g., guest services, kitchen support, donation sorting, etc.), including expectations, safety procedures, and daily responsibilities. Trauma-Informed Care Basics – A brief introduction to interacting with guests in a way that is sensitive, respectful, and supportive, especially for individuals who have experienced trauma. Shadowing & Support – New volunteers will shadow experienced staff or volunteers to build confidence before serving independently. Staff and supervisors will be available for guidance and feedback throughout their time. Additional leadership development or extended training may be provided for returning students or those taking on more responsibility.
