St James Episcopal Church Monterey

Organization Description

We are a small, inclusive Episcopal Church that hosts a broad-based Spiritual Center for the community. We seek new ways to relate with and serve God in this place and celebrate the fullness of life in each individual. We warmly welcome individuals of all backgrounds, all life-journeys, and identities to join in living in the ways that can bring about transformation and healing. In this spirit, we envision developing an Episcopal Service Corps program for young seekers who wish to discern what is next in their life.

Program Information

General Description of what students will be doing at this Site: We’re looking for someone to help us look at our current administrative, physical and digital structures and work with us to create a plan to grow into our next chapter of building a new program that will be a new ministry called Grounded Hope ESC, Monterey. This opportunity will include assessing and building foundational pieces for our small non-profit. We hope this opportunity will provide our community with some much-needed structure. There is a need for updated standard perating procedures and disaster preparedness plans alongside assessing our human resource capacity. The church needs a plan for its digital presence. We hope to work with someone who is interested in any or all these components. We are open to meeting you where you are on your journey and look to uplift your gifts as you help us build a solid foundation for our ongoing mission to help serve our community.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist in the development of a SOP for the church

Attend team meetings which may include but are not limited to leadership team meetings, Vestry of the Whole meetings and other meetings as assigned

Assist with the digital outreach of the church including website updates and social media presence

Based on students learning and knowledge, assess the current structures of the non-profit and create recommendations for improvement

Other duties as assigned in conversation with student.

Desired Intern Characteristics: We invite folks who have the technical skillsets to be successful in this role yet are open to learning as they go. We are looking for interns with patience as we are mostly a volunteer run organization. Change and progress take time and skill to accomplish. We look for folks who are willing to experiment and bring their ideas and expertise to us. We look for someone who has experience or interest in assessing non-profit structures, human resource capacity , marketing, websites and social media.

We are also looking for someone who may be interested in helping with the startup of a new ministry which would be like a non-profit of its own. This would be well suited for someone with skills with project management, finances, and the administrative skills of startup management or someone willing to learn as they go.

Special Considerations: Our office is currently on the second floor of our spiritual community center. The only access is by stairs we are working on accessibility but won't have this solved for a t least a year or two. This is why we would like to offer a hybrid option. We are also open to meeting anyone where they are for supervision meetings.

We are an open and affirming church. We are committed to social justice and equity work and believe deeply in the dignity of every human being. If folks have any concerns or questions please contact us.

Interprofessional opportunities available for the student: As a part of the developing ministry program we would invite the intern to join us in meetings with our potential partner organizations. This would include meeting with other non-profits in the area to assess the viability of a partnership for our program. Depending on their comfort level and skillset it would also be possible for them to identify and meet with agencies and partners on their own. This could also include other churches or agencies like Meals on Wheels, other academic departments etc.

Please provide details about trainings/ staff meetings offered or required:
Current teams working on these projects will provide an orientation including current progress and goals to bring the student up to speed on the work being done. The supervisor will provide an orientation for all current systems and tools being used. This will also include an introduction to the teams and time to acclimate. The tasks and training provided will be tailored to the interests and goals of the student.
The intern will be invited to join in on the current update meeting that happens on Mondays with the Priest and Senior Warden. This will not be required and only if their schedule allows.
