Opportunity Summary 

Afterschool Teacher
Afterschool Teachers are responsible for creating a safe, positive, and engaging environment for students after school hours. Duties include supervising students, supporting homework time, leading enrichment and recreational activities, and ensuring program policies are followed. Teachers serve as role models by promoting respect, responsibility, and teamwork while maintaining open communication with parents and staff.

Tasks:

Description of Tasks Required
During the placement, students will engage in the following duties to demonstrate their ability to apply professional knowledge and skills in an afterschool educational setting:

Lesson Planning & Curriculum Support: Assist in designing age-appropriate learning activities that align with program goals and support students’ academic and social development.

Instructional Delivery: Lead small group or one-on-one instructional sessions in literacy, math, homework support, and enrichment activities under the guidance of the mentor teacher.

Classroom Management: Apply positive behavior management strategies to maintain a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.

Program Facilitation: Plan and facilitate enrichment activities such as arts, STEM projects, team-building, and recreational games that foster creativity and collaboration.

Student Assessment & Progress Monitoring: Observe, document, and report student engagement and learning progress; provide feedback to the mentor/supervisor to inform instructional adjustments.

Professional Communication: Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff to support student success and strengthen school-community relationships.

Collaborative Teamwork: Participate in weekly staff meetings and contribute to program development, reflection, and problem-solving.

Administrative & Safety Duties: Support program operations by maintaining attendance records, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and helping with the setup and cleanup of instructional spaces.

Training:

Training Required
Students will receive structured training to ensure they are supported in achieving their learning outcomes. Training will include:

General Employer Orientation (mandatory): Introduction to organizational policies, procedures, workplace safety, and expectations.

Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings: Scheduled check-ins with the assigned mentor to review progress, provide feedback, and set goals.

Job Shadowing: Opportunities to observe experienced staff in their daily responsibilities to gain insight into professional practices.

Workshops/Skills Training: Participation in workshops that develop both technical and soft skills relevant to the placement role.
