Program Information

A behavioral health intern can play an important role in supporting measurement-based, evidence-based treatment. Interns may administer and score validated screening and outcome tools such as the PHQ-9, GAD-7, or AUDIT, and track changes over time to inform care planning. They can assist clinicians in applying evidence-based practices, including cognitive behavioral techniques, motivational interviewing, and brief interventions, always under supervision. Interns may provide psychoeducation tailored to client needs, document progress in the electronic health record, and help monitor treatment response using structured measures. They also participate in interdisciplinary case discussions and contribute to quality improvement initiatives focused on client outcomes. Through reflective supervision, interns learn to integrate research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values, while adhering to ethical standards and professional guidelines. This prepares them for competent practice in evidence-driven behavioral health care.

Health & Safety

Onboarding training for behavioral health interns ensures they are prepared to provide safe, ethical, and effective care. Training begins with a thorough review of agency policies, including confidentiality, informed consent, and the limits of privacy. Interns learn how to clearly explain informed consent to clients, including treatment goals, risks, benefits, and client rights. Mandated reporting requirements are emphasized, covering legal obligations to report suspected child, elder, or dependent adult abuse, along with procedures for documentation and notification. Additional training covers HIPAA compliance, cultural humility, ethical decision-making, and professional boundaries. Interns are oriented to the electronic health record, outcome measures (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7), and evidence-based treatment protocols. Shadowing supervisors allows them to observe best practices in patient engagement and documentation. This structured onboarding supports competence, confidence, and accountability, while reinforcing the importance of ethical, client-centered behavioral health care.
