Opportunity Summary 

This internship is designed for undergraduate public health students seeking hands-on experience in workplace safety, food safety, and environmental health practices within a corporate and restaurant environment. Over the course of three months, the intern will develop skills in training, inspections, policy implementation, and regulatory compliance.

Tasks

1. Shadow and assist with health and safety training sessions for management and kitchen staff.
2. Accompany Regional Safety Officer on weekly site visits to observe and participate in food safety and workplace safety inspections.
3. Review and practice inspection procedures, including fire safety checks, evacuation drills, and building safety standards.
4. Support the preparation and evaluation of safety training materials and inspection checklists.
5. Conduct a mock training session and safety inspection with minimal supervision by the end of the internship.
6. Participate in professional discussions and debriefings with corporate staff to contextualize safety practices and policies.

Training

1. Initial general orientation at the corporate office (mandatory)
2. Weekly one-on-one mentor meetings with the Regional Safety Officer
3. Job shadowing during health and safety trainings for both front-of-house and back-of-house staff
4. Field shadowing of inspections at new and existing restaurant locations
5. Hands-on practice with safety checklists, drills, and inspection procedures
6. Access to training materials and resources to support learning outcomes

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to…
1. Conduct a basic food safety and workplace safety inspection with minimal supervision.
2. Lead or assist in a health and safety training session for restaurant staff.
3. Identify and evaluate safety procedures in restaurant operations, including fire and evacuation drills.
4. Connect classroom knowledge of public health and occupational safety to real-world restaurant settings.
5. Demonstrate professional communication skills while working with both corporate staff and restaurant employees.
