Opportunity Summary 

Substance use disorder intensive outpatient treatment (conduct groups, individual sessions, UA & breath screens).

Intensive case management (needs assessment, referral, follow up)

Conduct HIV testing (client-centered counseling, administer & read HIV test & referral (to appropriate resources)

Tasks:

Conduct HIV testing (administer and accurately provide test results), to include client-centered counseling on safer sex practices and other harm reduction strategies (e.g., needle exchange) and referral to appropriate resources based on the counseling session.

Conduct SUD IOP treatment groups (in-person and teleconference) that includes following a manualized treatment paradigm through 90 minute sessions daily M-F. Conduct SUD individual structured sessions that focus on specific problem areas common in recovery (relapse prevention, sober sex, drug/alcohol dreams, ‘The Wall’, etc.).

Conduct UA screening (administer and accurately provide test results of drug screen), and accurately read breathalyzer results.

Conduct intensive case management sessions that include a needs assessment for specific domains, provision of appropriate referrals, follow up sessions to ensure linkage to those referrals and identify further barriers to sobriety (housing, income, recovery oriented support).

Documentation of all actions including though not limited to: group notes for each individual, individual and case management sessions, tracking logs, etc. Documentation must be completed within specific timeframes, include specific aspects and observations and written in proper prose.

Training:

General employer orientation: Orient to organization policies, procedures & regulations; overview of program goals & objectives, and methodology; orient to clinic policies and routines, which is where the hub of our program is co-located.

Weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings: There will be a set day (TBD) to meet where overview of the student’s work will provide a space to evaluate and monitor performance, as well as ask & answer questions relevant to the position. Self-reflection and evaluation will be in the framework as well as observation.

Job shadowing: The student will be required to shadow program staff in executing groups, individual and case management sessions; and the student will shadow seasoned HIV testing counselors to observe how testing is conducted and how to accurately read the test; as well as becoming familiar working from a medical aspect of the population.

Workshops/skills training: The student will attend training for HIV testing counselor, which focuses heavily on the counseling aspect of client/patient centered techniques that include motivational interviewing and reframing. In addition, training for SUD Intensive Outpatient treatment following the Matrix curriculum (focus on early, protracted and long term recovery strategies); as well as training for Intensive Case Management.

Provision of work samples: Samples of the student’s work will be reviewed and discussed in an open forum with the program manager as well as the Lead for the program. On the job training will give the student the opportunity at all times to ask pertinent questions, and given the chance to provide input.

Overview/contextualization of assigned tasks: The broad overview of assigned tasks will highlight interaction with our population - indigent, transient, unhoused people with chronic mental health and substance use disorders; include directly working with our client/patients conducting HIV testing and counseling/referral, facilitating SUD groups and sitting with individual client/patients to map out individual service plans.

Testing: At the onset, the student will be observed while actively performing assigned tasks and be evaluated in real-time to better help them learn and understand our approaches. In areas of formal training, tests will include proficiency, competency and assessment of the ability to effectively counsel.

Administer & accurately read UA drug screens & breathalyzer

Conduct individual counseling:
a. Provide guidance to individuals on their journey of recovery
b. Address a specific curriculum of topics

Conduct intensive case management (ICM) sessions:
a. Conduct needs assessments
b. Identify problematic issues (e.g., housing, MH therapy, etc.)
c. provide referrals and resources
d. Follow up to ensure accuracy of referral & need of further concentration
e. Perform regular check-ins to identify issues that crop up

Conduct HIV/HCV rapid screens
a. Conduct client-centered HIV prevention focused counseling
b. Knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques, parroting, reframing, etc.
c. Provide client-centered counseling on safer sex practices, availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)
d. Administer and accurately read HIV & HCV rapid screens

Comprehensive documentation:
a. Consents (proper signatures, dates, etc.
b. Record sessions (group & individual); interactions; CM sessions
c. Content included (important details, structured prose, accuracy)
d. Completion in a timely manner
e. File in accordance with program guidelines
