Sports Performance InternAt — CSUF - Athletics
The CSUF Sports Performance Internship allows for interns to gain hands-on experience in assisting a Division I collegiate program's strength and conditioning. Here, the intern can learn what it takes to be a sports performance coach in a collegiate setting. The internship covers areas such as intern education (covering things such as creating your own coaching philosophy to learning how to program for specific collegiate teams), to actual hours on the weight room floor, in where the intern can gain valuable experiences in coaching athletes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
1) Come up with their own coaching philosophies and values, which will help establish and distinguish who they are as a coach.
2) To plan and prepare the implementation of a strength and conditioning program for their respective team assignments.
3) Lead a strength and conditioning session for athletes via a practical assessment. Interns will be asked to coach up staff members as if they were their athletes, and they will be asked to teach them the exercise for the day. Certain criteria will need to be met in order for the practicum to be deemed successful. Feedback will also be given to the interns in order to improve their coaching skills.
Training
To help the student achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will:
1) Hold weekly intern education sessions that will cover various topics in strength and conditioning.
2) Allot hours for our interns to be paired up with sports performance coaches and gain experience in assisting on the weight room floor.
3) Have interns turn in assignments to see if there is a comprehension of the topics being taught during our intern education sessions.
Tasks/Duties
The intern will demonstrate the learning outcomes by: completing intern assignments related to the Sports Performance Internship curriculum and earning responsibilities from sports performance coaches to help assist training sessions and gain a presence on the weight room floor, amongst other things.
