Opportunity Summary

Cypress High School's Independent Learning Center is seeking a motivated and reliable intern to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in education, youth development, program development, human services or social work.

As a Community Schools Intern, you will work directly with our students and staff to support a \\whole-child\\ approach to education. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Student Support: Work under the guidance of our teacher leads to assist with various tasks, providing support to students with their coursework and projects.

  • Supervision: Monitor students in the Independent Learning Centers, ensuring a productive and safe learning environment.

  • Administrative Tasks: Assist with general administrative duties, which may include organizing materials, preparing for workshops or events, and other miscellaneous tasks as needed.

  • Relationship Building: Engage with students to build a foundation of trust and respect, contributing to a positive school culture.

This internship is more than just a job; it's a chance to be a part of a team that helps students thrive and succeed. We are looking for someone who is proactive, a strong communicator, and committed to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment.

tasks

Support Student Academic and Social-Emotional Growth: Facilitate small-group or one-on-one sessions in the Independent Learning Centers to assist students with their academic work, project-based learning, and portfolio development. This includes helping them set and track goals, manage their time, and develop problem-solving skills, thereby demonstrating an understanding of the \\whole-child\\ approach to education.

Assist in Developing and Implementing Community-Based Learning Opportunities: Work with a teacher lead to help design and implement community-based learning opportunities. This involves conducting research on local community assets, collaborating with a community-based organization, and helping students connect their coursework to a real-world issue. This duty directly allows the intern to explore the principles of community-based learning and apply them in practice.

Conduct and Analyze a Needs/Asset Assessment: As part of the collaborative leadership and strategic community partnerships outcomes, you may assist in collecting and analyzing data from students and families through informal conversations, surveys, and focus groups. You will then help summarize the findings to inform program development or a new community partnership, demonstrating your ability to contribute to the school's continuous improvement process.

Contribute to Family and Community Engagement Initiatives: Assist in the development, planning, and execution of family engagement events or workshops. This duty involves tasks such as outreach to families, developing a communication plan, and helping to facilitate the event. This experience will provide you with a hands-on understanding of how to support the role of strategic community partnerships and engage families as partners in the educational process.

training

Initial General Employer Orientation: This mandatory session will introduce you to the Anaheim Union High School District's (AUHSD) mission and vision, the specific role of Katella High School as a Community School, and the foundational principles of the California Community Schools Framework. This orientation will provide the initial context for understanding our whole-child approach and the importance of collaborative leadership.
Workshops and Skills Training: You will participate in workshops on topics such as youth engagement, de-escalation techniques, and culturally responsive practices. These sessions will directly support your ability to build professional relationships and foster a positive learning culture with students.
Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings: You will have regular, scheduled meetings with a dedicated mentor who will be a teacher lead or a Community Schools Coordinator. These meetings are a critical part of your training, providing a forum for you to discuss challenges, reflect on your experiences, and receive direct guidance to help you support independent learning and student agency.
Job Shadowing: You will have the opportunity to shadow various staff members, including our Community Schools Coordinator and teachers. This will allow you to see firsthand how strategic community partnerships are managed and how different team members contribute to a collaborative leadership model.

Learning outcome:

1. Develop an understanding of the \\whole-child\\ approach to education within an alternative learning environment.
2. Gain practical experience in building professional relationships and fostering a positive learning culture.
3. Contribute to a collaborative leadership model in a school environment.
