Opportunity Summary 

Student position at Discovery Commons Whittier will be responsible for fulfilling various resident activities as scheduled on the daily agenda or assigned tasks as instructed by the Director of Celebration. Our focus is to enhance residents’ quality of life.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The activities require engagement of participating residents which may include but are not limited:

·Facilitate and supervise gaming, crafts, preparing for events and/or socializing.

·Assigned tasks may be administrative in nature, for example, creating flyers for events, filing, and assisting in seasonal decorating of our community.

·Maintain a safe and secure environment for all staff, residents and guests.

·Encourage teamwork through cooperative interactions with other workers.

·Support positive and professional image through action and dress·      

Report any concerns immediately and directly to the Director of Celebrations.

Tasks:

-Can independently and confidently lead group activities
-Residents are responsive to student engagement
-Able to contribute creative ideas of activities that align with company goals to enhance resident living
-Know where to pull resources from various locations in our community.
-Able to provide caring and compassionate responses to residents
-Demonstrate use of software programs to complete expectations

Training:

TRAINING:
The Student will shadow Director of Celebrations or Celebrations Assistant to learn how to carry out expectations and become part of our community culture. The training process will take approximately 4 hours and will require the student to learn and understand the following:
·How and where to read the daily schedule, monthly calendar and understand necessary changes.
·Locate resources and supplies to carry out expectations
·Requirements for social activities and room visits
·The software programs to create flyers consistent with current style and format
·Where to find and print activity worksheets, file documents and determine the difference between office supplies vs. storage supplies.
·How to respond to inquiries from residents and other staff members. Learn to redirect some inquires out of our scope.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
Refine communication skill and follow instructions
Facilitate, lead and supervise group activities
Fulfill general administrative duties
Develop creative thinking
Practice artistic creativity in crafts and art projects
