Caregiving InternAt — In Home Supportive Services

Opportunity Summary 

This opportunity allows students to gain hands-on experience providing direct support to individuals with disabilities through the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program. Students will learn to assist with daily living activities, promote independence, and provide emotional and academic support. The role emphasizes communication, problem-solving, and professional caregiving skills while preparing students for careers in healthcare, social services, or related fields.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

How to provide compassionate, person-centered care for individuals with disabilities. Practical skills in assisting with daily living activities and promoting independence. Effective communication and interpersonal skills in a caregiving context. Strategies for managing time, balancing responsibilities, and maintaining professional boundaries. An understanding of the importance of advocacy, patience, and adaptability in supportive roles.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive training in communication, time management, and organization of caregiving tasks. They will also be guided in how to maintain professional boundaries, follow safety protocols in the home, and learn to use adaptive strategies to support the individual’s daily living and academic success. Ongoing supervision and feedback will be provided to help them grow into the role.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students will be trained to follow established safety protocols when providing care in the home environment. This includes proper body mechanics to prevent injury, infection control and hygiene practices, and awareness of emergency procedures. Students will also be instructed to maintain professional boundaries, respect confidentiality, and immediately report any safety concerns. Clear guidelines will be provided to ensure both the student and the individual receiving care remain safe and supported.
