Opportunity Summary 

The mentors for this program are all members of OLLI. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) is in the College of Health and Human Services and has over 800 members. OLLI offers non-credit classes to adults 50 +, classes include a wide range of topics including art, music, health/fitness, history, literature and technology. No tests or grades – just classes for the joy of learning. Students will meet weekly with mentors via ZOOM at assigned times.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will have the opportunity to enhance their communication skills with people of all ages. Students will work on interview skills as well as the ability to be interviewed. Students will have the unique opportunity to learn from older adults about various topics while asking appropriate questions to engage in conversation. Students will be provided with a low-stakes environment to practice presentation skills. Tentative GERN 400 Twelve-Week Program with Questions Weeks 1-2: Getting Acquainted and Life Story Week 1: Introductions and Sharing Backgrounds Goal: Establish a comfortable environment for sharing and rapport building. Week 2: Life Highlights and Formative Experiences Goal: Share life stories and formative experiences that have influenced personal growth. Weeks 3-4: Resilience and Health Week 3: Discussing Challenges and Resilience Goal: Understand each other's experiences with overcoming adversity. Goal: Discuss physical and mental health, and explore healthy habits. Weeks 5-6: Technology and Lifelong Learning Week 5: Adapting to New Technologies Goal: Explore how technology has impacted life experiences and communication. Week 6: Learning Together – Teaching and Tech Skills Goal: Facilitate a mutual learning exchange, with students potentially teaching tech skills. Weeks 7-8: Values, Life Lessons, and Future Hopes Week 7: Exploring Personal Values and Life Lessons Goal: Deepen the conversation by discussing core values and the lessons each has learned. Week 8: Hopes for the Future and Legacy Goal: Reflect on future aspirations and how each participant wants to be remembered. Weeks 9-10: Collaboration on a Project Week 9: Planning the Project Goal: Begin discussing a joint project that represents insights from previous weeks. Week 10: Working on the Project Goal: Collaborate on the project and finalize key aspects. Weeks 11-12: Reflection and Celebration Week 11: Reflecting on the Experience Goal: Reflect on the relationship and progress made through the program. Week 12: Celebration and Final Presentation Goal: Celebrate the journey, share the project, and acknowledge the growth in the mentoring relationship.

Opportunity Training 

Students will be required to complete an orientation with the instructor and OLLI leads. Training will go over the requirements of the opportunity, what is expected of them, and appropriate behavior during the mentor/mentee meetings.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

This placement will be completely remote and take place mostly via ZOOM, but some work asynchronously.

Opportunity Application Instructions 

Students will submit a Qualtrics survey with Gern 400 instructor. No resume or interview process will be required for the student to undergo. However, students will complete a getting to know you survey.
