Opportunity Summary 

CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods is a nonprofit in North Orange County serving low-income children and families in Fullerton. Its mission is to work with residents and partners to reduce education and health disparities, strengthen neighborhoods, and break cycles of poverty.

The Academic Success Program Tutor supports K–12 students by providing academic help and connecting them to resources. Under the Program Coordinator, interns learn how to identify student needs, maintain updated student reports, and participate in community outreach to better understand the community.

Student Intern(s) will:

  • Identify educational resources that meet each tutee’s academic needs.

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with the tutee and their parent or legal guardian.

  • Stay mentee-focused by supporting each tutee’s specific learning and personal goals.

  • Collaborate with other interns to provide consistent support.

  • Monitor and document each tutee’s progress throughout the program.

  • Participate in community events to better understand local needs.

  • Develop and lead a weekly program in art, science, math, or reading.

  • Use and assist tutees with grade-appropriate electronic learning resources.

Student intern(s) may also complete additional assigned tasks. Occasional weekend hours may be available for special events. Interns must be motivated, patient, and willing to work with children.

Alongside the coordinator, literacy specialist, and staff, student intern(s) will:

  • Work directly with underserved and vulnerable Spanish-speaking populations.
  • Provide one-on-one support to students in areas of academic difficulty.
  • Communicate progress to parents/guardians after each tutoring session.
  • Collaborate with other tutors and interns to support student learning.
  • Represent the Center and the University professionally at all times.

Student intern(s) may occasionally be assigned additional tasks. Some weekend hours may be available for special events. Interns must be motivated, patient, and willing to work with children.
