Youth MentorAt — San Diego County Sheriff - RESPECT Project
The Sheriff's RESPECT Project is an after-school character development program for high school students. Interns work alongside Sheriff's personnel to mentor and support youth as they transition into adulthood. Activities include sports/fitness, arts/crafts, classroom discussions, presentations and special events.
Interns in RESPECT Project will collaborate with Sheriff's deputies and case managers to mentor, teach, and support youth and families in the community. Interns will gain valuable knowledge about the criminal justice system, juvenile law, youth development, mentoring, and evidence-based curriculum to support healthy decision-making and character development. RESPECT academy classes also incorporate fitness, sports, team-building exercises, meal service, small-group discussions, and classroom presentations.
Interns must complete a RESPECT Project volunteer screening process, including a Sheriff's background check. If approved, intern must attend a 2-hour tour and training which covers expectations, policies, and mandated reporter guidelines.
Student will be strongly encouraged to participate in team fitness and sports (within their capabilities), which could include carrying weights, pushing sleds, running, etc.
If interested, please contact Deputy Dustin Nelson (program coordinator) at dustin.nelson@sdsheriff.org or (760) 415-6814 to schedule a phone or in-person interview. If approved, student will complete written application followed by necessary background checks and training.
