AIR Programs Mentor & Academic Support AdvocateAt — American Indian Recruitment (AIR) Programs
Applicant will serve as a mentor and academic support intern for a cohort of 30+ students who are Native American and/or from underrepresented backgrounds. These students will be taking university credit for the first time, and the applicant’s role is essential to helping them feel supported, confident, and successful throughout the course.
By the end of the applicant’s course, the student will learn: Essential skills in tutoring and mentoring Native youth through project-oriented programming activities. Core knowledge for working in Tribal communities across the region, including: Understanding kinship dynamics present in many Indian Reservations Appropriate etiquette when working within reservation boundaries (including virtual engagement such as Zoom) Familiarity with Tribal governmental structures An understanding of the educational deficits and challenges that Native youth face in rural educational settings. Strategies for effective engagement with Tribal communities within the educational context, including an awareness of historical trauma—such as the boarding school era—and its impact on community trust in educational institutions. How to use their own experiences to mentor students in navigating university-level academic work.
The applicant will participate in a workshop on “Working in Tribal Communities” to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics within our Native communities as well as Tribal governmental structures. Additionally, a mandated reporter will always be present during all meetings.
Students may need to travel to Tribal Education Centers within the San Diego County Region Students will have to attend 2 "in-person" meetings located on the UCSD Campus
