Friends of the Los Angeles River

Organization Description

Our mission is to build capacity for communities, students, and future leaders to advocate for nature, climate, and equity on the LA River. We work to make the LA River healthier, greener, and more accessible by restoring habitat, educating the next generation, and advocating for a future where both people and wildlife can thrive.

Health & Safety

We conduct litter cleanups and invasive plant removal, which involves manual labor outdoors and the use of tools. Sometimes, we encounter sharp objects like glass, metal and syringes. Staff and volunteers always use gloves and tools like grabbers or gardening tools to make their task safer and easier. Volunteers sometimes help us with event logistics at weekday evening programs like an expert lecture or sunset nature walk. In all of these cases, staff and volunteers are prepped beforehand of what to expect, what to bring, and safety precautions. Staff are trained in first aid and CPR. If a volunteer will be helping our staff during youth field trips and programs, they will be required to be live scanned and be reimbursed by FoLAR for completing a live scan. Our community events do NOT require this live scan.
