LCRC Community Engagement Intern/Volunteer Position Description

 APPOINTMENT INFORMATION:

OVERVIEW OF POSITION:

DIRC Student Interns/Volunteers are valued members of the DIRC team who serve as liaisons between the student body and the Department and play a vital role in fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment. DIRC Student Interns/ Volunteers engage in and support activities that fulfill the mission, vision, and values of the Department, the Division of Human Resources and Inclusive Excellence, and CSUF. As students themselves, Student Interns/Volunteers are uniquely positioned to support the reduction of barriers to access for students of color and underserved communities. They are vital to providing insight into student interests, perceptions, and experiences, as well as participating in the design, implementation, and assessment of DIRC programs, events, and initiatives. Through feedback sessions, focus groups, leadership, team and departmental meetings, monthly reports, and more, student volunteers/interns will have a variety of ways to share their perspectives and what they have learned from their peers with the Department and Division. Student volunteers/interns will be provided opportunities to engage in training and education to advance their own personal, professional, leadership, and identity development while also serving their communities and gaining experience to add to their resumes.

 

The goal of the Community Engagement Student Intern/Volunteer is to connect students to the Department where a community of care is established by engaging in DIRC programs, events, and initiatives while also becoming aware of other

student-supportive services on campus and ways to get involved. By assisting with decreasing barriers to enhance access to services and support by providing effective communication and being able to connect with students in a meaningful, welcoming, and peer-oriented manner, they are able to create a tangible impact on their peers.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of LCRC Pro-Staff the Community Engagement Student Intern/ Volunteer will follow an activities plan tailored to the needs of the Center/Department that matches their skills and interests and is based on the following responsibilities.

25% Student Engagement and Perspective:

  • Actively engage with fellow students across various programs, years, and backgrounds to gather diverse perspectives in compliance with departmentally approved strategies.
  • Attend other CSUF events as assigned to gain insight into the student experience and interests.
  • Stay up to date on trends and happenings on campus that are of interest to
  • Provide ideas and feedback on programs, events, and initiatives that would be relevant and impactful to the student body and on strategies to outreach to students to promote programs and events alongside how to motivate
  • Gain insight and feedback from students who participate in DIRC activities, programs, and initiatives to provide input to improve overall services.

 

25% Student Engagement and Support:

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that fosters a community of belonging in the Center and the Department.

  • Keep up to date with campus resources and provide relevant, precise, and updated information to students on campus and departmental resources.
  • Engage in outreach activities including but not limited to providing overviews and tours of the space, tabling, and more.
  • Craft ways to engage in community building within the Center and
  • Strategize and suggest ways to connect with new students and introduce them to DIRC and related resources.

40% Operational, Event, Program, and Initiative Support:

  • Support the Supervisor and Graduate Student Assistant in creating, implementing, and assessing impactful co-curricular student learning and development opportunities.
  • Promote the events, activities, and initiatives of the departments to students to garner interest and increase participation.
  • Support all aspects of preparing for and executing events, small and large scale, including but not limited to set up and take down.
  • Be present at events to provide on-site support, address and escalate issues as needed, and ensure a positive experience for participants.
  • Support front desk coverage and answer student inquiries while escalating as
  • Keep the Center space tidy, taking stock of supplies that may be running
  • Assist with administrative duties including data entry, responding to emails, taking messages, and phone calls.
  • Attend supervision, staff, and departmental meetings and

10% Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Duties may be assigned within the scope of the role of Student Assistant, depending on the needs of the Center/Department.

REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:

  • Maintains full-time student enrollment at CSUF for the duration of the
  • Maintains a good academic standing at CSUF for the duration of the
  • Able to intern/ volunteer 10 hours a
  • Able to attend LCRC weekly staff

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has experience serving diverse
  • Has experience in an office setting and event
  • Has existing knowledge of campus resources and the needs of the diverse communities at CSUF.
  • Previous experience in organizing or participating in diversity-related
  • Familiarity with the services and resources provided by the Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers.

Training: 

  • Provide an initial orientation with the internship supervisor.
  • Review list of campus and local opportunities/organizations 
  • Consult with intern to review current programming.
  • Partner with intern to brainstorm and develop meaningful programming.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Intern will gain skills in program development and event planning. 
  • Intern will learn about resources and supports that benefit the Latinx community.
  • Intern will gain experience in connecting others to resources. 
  • Intern will learn about Latinx culture and identity.
  • Intern will gain experience in office management.
