Fullerton Museum Center – Internship Program

Thank you for your interest in becoming an intern at the Fullerton Museum Center. Our Internship Program is designed to provide hands-on professional experience while enhancing students’ understanding of museum operations, communications, and community engagement. This is an unpaid internship that may be completed for academic credit or for non-academic professional experience and lasts for the duration of one academic semester.

Position Overview

The Marketing/PR Intern will join the dynamic and collaborative team at the Fullerton Museum Center and gain valuable, real-world experience in marketing, communications, public relations, and social media management within a cultural institution. This unpaid internship is offered for the duration of the academic semester and is open to currently enrolled college students or recent graduates, whether or not academic credit is required.

Responsibilities

Typical responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing and assisting with press releases and promotional materials
  • Contacting and coordinating with local media outlets
  • Representing the Museum at community events and programs
  • Scheduling, tracking, and coordinating marketing and press outreach
  • Assisting with marketing campaigns and special projects
  • Creating, scheduling, and assisting with content for social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok)
  • Supporting social media engagement, analytics tracking, and content planning
  • Supporting day-to-day communications and administrative tasks

Candidates who are organized, creative, and able to work in a fast-paced office environment are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Currently enrolled college students or recent graduates
  • Interest in marketing, communications, public relations, digital marketing, or social media
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with major social media platforms and trends
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Learning Opportunities

Although interns are generally supervised by a specific department, they will have the opportunity to actively observe and participate in other areas of museum operations. The Fullerton Museum Center staff will work with students and academic advisors to support internship and independent study requirements at the student’s school, if academic credit is being pursued.

Training:

Students participating in the Marketing/PR Internship at the Fullerton Museum Center will receive structured training and ongoing supervision designed to support their learning outcomes throughout the academic semester.

General Orientation (Mandatory): Interns will begin with a comprehensive orientation introducing the Museum’s mission, organizational structure, policies, and workplace expectations, as well as an overview of marketing, communications, and public engagement goals.

Role-Specific Training: Interns will receive an overview and contextualization of assigned tasks, including marketing workflows, branding standards, media relations practices, and social media guidelines. Training materials, examples of past work, and style guides will be provided.

Mentorship & Supervision: Interns will participate in regular one-on-one check-ins with their supervisor to review progress, receive feedback, and connect daily tasks to broader marketing and museum operations goals.

Job Shadowing & Cross-Department Exposure: Interns will have opportunities to observe staff across departments (e.g., exhibitions, education, events) to better understand how marketing supports overall museum operations.

Hands-On Practice & Work Samples: Interns will complete supervised, real-world projects such as drafting press releases, assisting with social media content, and supporting event promotion. Constructive feedback will be provided, and interns may retain select work samples for their professional portfolios.

Skill Development & Reflection: Interns will receive guidance on industry tools and best practices, with opportunities for reflective discussion, self-assessment, and evaluation aligned with academic requirements when applicable.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic semester, the Marketing/PR Intern will be able to:

Develop and execute basic marketing and public relations strategies for a cultural institution.

Produce professional written content, including press releases, promotional copy, and social media posts.

Apply social media best practices to increase audience engagement and support museum programming.

Gain hands-on experience working with media outlets, event promotion, and community outreach.

Demonstrate an understanding of museum operations and collaborative workflows within a nonprofit organization.
