In-Office and Direct Patient-Care Hospice VolunteerAt — Advocare Hospice, Inc.

Opportunity Summary 

We are looking for compassionate and caring individuals to become a part of our volunteer team. Volunteers provide emotional support and practical assistance that enhances the comfort and quality of life for patients, their families and loved ones. These services can include being available for companionship, listening or simply \\being there\\ for a patient, as well as running errands and preparing meals. If you are unsure about starting right away in the field, there are other options available to volunteer with us, such as, being of help to our office staff by making letters, calling patients, and much more.

Tasks:

-Observe and support holistic, patient-centered care for individuals with life-limiting illness under supervision
-Assist hospice staff with non-clinical supportive care activities that promote patient comfort and dignity
-Communicate respectfully and compassionately with patients, families, and the interdisciplinary care team
-Demonstrate understanding of hospice philosophy, including comfort care, quality of life, and family support
-Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings or discussions as appropriate to understand coordinated care
-Assist with documentation tasks in accordance with privacy, confidentiality, and HIPAA regulations
-Follow hospice policies, safety procedures, and infection-control practices
-Observe and support emotional, social, and spiritual care approaches used in end-of-life care
-Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for diverse beliefs surrounding illness, death, and dying
-Use active listening and professional communication skills when interacting with patients and families

Training:

Student will receive a general employee orientation that will allow them to gain insight on what hospice is as a whole. Student will be able to shadow different positions in the office and learn about each role/position individually. Student will be paired with another volunteer to show them more about being a hospice volunteer, as well as to have another individual to rely on incase they have any questions. Student will also participate in monthly in-services to further enhance their volunteer skills.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to understand the goals, mission, and patient-centered approach of hospice care.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to provide a compassionate presence, companionship, and manage personal reactions to intense situations.
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to know the roles of the interdisciplinary team (nurses, social workers, chaplains, etc.) and coordinating care.
