Opportunity Summary

Universidad Popular offers internship and volunteer opportunities across North County focused on community education, cultural knowledge, and hands-on, multigenerational learning. Our programs emphasize self-reliance, leadership development, and culturally relevant approaches that strengthen families and communities, particularly within Latinx communities. Interns participate in at least one core program area: Cultivando Liderazgo, supporting community members preparing for citizenship and civic engagement through history, government, and English learning; Cultivando Classes, which build leadership skills around topics such as disaster preparedness, workers’ rights, health, and civic engagement; Education and Outreach, assisting Community Health Workers with outreach in hard-to-reach communities; or Cultivando Salud, focused on food justice and food distribution efforts in North County, especially Pauma Valley.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Interns gain practical teaching, communication, and outreach experience while working closely with Spanish-speaking community members. Opportunities occur on weekdays and some weekends at multiple North County locations. Reliable transportation and availability are required.

Opportunity Training

Students will be required to attend one (1) orientation session and one (1) Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services training in order to begin activities. Students will be notified of training dates in advance. If a student cannot attend the designated training date, they should communicate with the site supervisor to arrange for a separate training.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity

Students may be required to lift heavy items. Students may also be expected to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time depending on their assigned activities. Students are expected to communicate with their supervisor if they are unable to complete these tasks so that reasonable accommodations can be made.

Opportunity Application Instructions

Interested individuals are encouraged to contact our Internship lead, Nathalie Martinez. In an email, please include your name, major, reasons for interest, and course information (if applicable). The Universidad Popular team will contact interested individuals with further information on current projects and how to apply.
