Community Outreach and Engagement InternAt — County of Los Angeles

Opportunity Summary 

The SPA 7 Exide Community Outreach and Engagement staff support and engage residents in the affected communities, in cities of Vernon, Commerce, Maywood, Bell, Huntington Park, East Los Angeles, and parts of Boyle Heights by providing education and prevention on lead exposure. Strategies to promote lead prevention services consist of outreach activities at community events to facilitate linkages to services. The team also collaborates with local CBOs to increase lead poisoning prevention awareness in addition to medical providers and conduct internal assessments of project goals, and outreach efforts.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the internship, students will have developed: Knowledge of lead exposure, environmental health, and prevention strategies Experience planning and implementing outreach and engagement activities Skills in community education and health communication An understanding of partnership-building with CBOs and medical providers Experience completing assessments and project tracking Increased cultural and community awareness related to environmental health disparities
