Position Overview: We're seeking a passionate and driven Radio Promoter to join our team. In this role, you'll be responsible for getting our clients' music on the airwaves by building and maintaining relationships with radio station decision-makers and executing strategic promotion campaigns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain close relationships with program directors, music directors, and key decision-makers at radio stations across various formats and market sizes
  • Pitch new music to radio personnel, providing compelling reasons why songs deserve airplay
  • Create tailored promotion strategies for each client based on genre, target audience, and the artist's career stage
  • Make regular contact with radio stations to advocate for client music and coordinate promotional opportunities
  • Track every spin and monitor chart performance across all markets
  • Provide detailed reports to clients showing airplay metrics, chart positions, and audience impressions
  • Identify the right stations and formats for each track to maximize exposure
  • Coordinate radio appearances, interviews, and contests to generate buzz around client releases

Tasks:

Radio Station Relationship Management (25%):

Conduct regular outreach calls and emails to program directors and music directors to pitch current client releases and maintain ongoing relationships
Document station feedback, programming preferences, and contact information in the company database
Schedule and coordinate follow-up communications based on station programming cycles and feedback
Attend industry events or conference calls to network with radio personnel and strengthen professional connections

Campaign Strategy Development and Execution (30%):

Research and identify target radio stations and formats appropriate for specific client releases based on genre, market demographics, and artist positioning
Develop tailored pitch strategies for different stations, crafting compelling narratives about why specific tracks deserve airplay
Create campaign timelines that strategically sequence outreach from smaller markets to major markets to build momentum
Collaborate with team members to adjust strategies based on initial market response and chart performance

Airplay Tracking and Data Analysis (20%):

Monitor and track all client airplay using industry tracking systems (e.g., Mediabase, BDS)
Analyze airplay data to identify trends, growth opportunities, and stations that may be receptive to new pitches
Compile weekly or bi-weekly reports for clients that include spin counts, chart positions, audience impressions, and market-by-market breakdowns
Interpret data to provide strategic recommendations for campaign adjustments or next steps

Client Communication and Reporting (15%):

Prepare comprehensive client reports that translate airplay metrics into meaningful insights about campaign progress
Participate in client update calls to present campaign results and discuss strategy
Respond to client inquiries about campaign status, providing context and professional analysis
Draft status updates and progress summaries that demonstrate understanding of industry benchmarks and competitive landscape

Music Industry Research and Market Intelligence (10%):

Research radio format trends, programming changes, and station personnel moves that may impact campaign strategies
Monitor competitor activity and chart performance to identify opportunities for client positioning
Analyze successful campaigns in similar genres to identify best practices and strategic approaches
Prepare briefing documents on format-specific trends, key decision-makers, and market conditions for internal strategy sessions

Professional Development Activities:

Attend internal strategy meetings where campaign approaches are debated and refined
Participate in post-campaign evaluations to analyze what worked, what didn't, and lessons learned
Contribute to brainstorming sessions for new client pitches and promotional angles
Shadow senior promoters during critical pitch calls and station negotiations

These duties ensure students engage in substantive, professional-level work that requires critical thinking, strategic planning, relationship management, data analysis, and professional communication—all essential skills in the music promotion industry.

Training:

Initial Orientation (Week 1):

General employer orientation covering Howard Rosen Promotion's history, mission, client roster, and company culture (mandatory)
Overview of the radio promotion industry, including key terminology, radio formats, and how airplay tracking systems work
Introduction to internal systems, databases, and reporting tools used for tracking spins and managing station contacts
Review of professional communication standards and best practices for interacting with radio personnel

Ongoing Structured Training:
Weekly One-on-One Mentor Meetings:

Scheduled check-ins with assigned mentor to review progress, discuss challenges, and set goals for the upcoming week
Feedback on pitching techniques, relationship-building efforts, and campaign strategies
Guidance on navigating difficult conversations with radio programmers and handling rejection

Job Shadowing (Weeks 1-4):

Shadow experienced promoters during live pitch calls to radio stations to observe professional communication techniques
Observe strategy meetings where campaign plans are developed for new releases
Listen in on client update calls to understand reporting expectations and how to translate metrics into meaningful insights

Skills Training Workshops:

Workshop on effective pitching and persuasion techniques specific to radio promotion
Training on reading and interpreting radio charts, airplay data, and audience metrics
Session on understanding different radio formats (Top 40, Country, Rock, Urban, etc.) and their unique programming approaches

Hands-On Learning with Support:

Provision of work samples including successful pitch emails, campaign strategies, and client reports to serve as templates
Overview and contextualization of each assigned task before execution, explaining how it fits into broader campaign goals
Graduated responsibility model: starting with research and tracking tasks, progressing to supervised pitching, then independent station contact

Resource Materials:

Access to training literature including industry publications, format-specific programming guides, and case studies of successful campaigns
Documentation of station contacts, preferences, and historical relationships to inform outreach strategies

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:
