Dental Office InternAt — Anaheim Hills Pediatric Dentistry

Opportunity Summary 

This internship will focus on making oral health assessments and offering guidance based on the assessments. Assessments are made using the American Dental Association's Caries Risk Assessment form. The intern will assist the dentist in completing the assessment for each patient to determine a child's risk for caries. Risk factors include but not limited to a child's general health, diet, hygiene habits, dental history and socioeconomic background. After identifying the risk, the intern will then utilize health education and promotion to modify behaviors and lower risk for dental caries. 

Task:

Aiding the dentist and families in completing the caries risk assessment forms
Identifying the child's risk and making recommendations based on the risk
3 month follow ups to assess risk again and evaluate any changes in risk

Training;

Weekly meetings with pediatric dentist mentor
Literature review of caries risk assessment and utilization of the assessment form

Learning Outcome:

Identify risk factors for caries development
Utilize health education and promotion to modify behavior
Empower families by giving them the tools to prevent dental disease
Provide dental hygiene techniques and nutritional counseling to improve and lower caries risk
