Opportunity Summary 

The student will support daily operations in a nursing and long-term care setting under the supervision of licensed nurses and experienced caregivers. Responsibilities include assisting residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), supporting basic clinical tasks, maintaining safety and infection control standards, and contributing to residents’ overall comfort and well being. The student will work closely with staff to provide respectful, patient-centered care while developing foundational healthcare skills and professional responsibility.

Tasks:

The student will perform professional and pre-professional duties, with more than 80% of tasks focused on healthcare-related learning and skill development. Duties include:
Assisting residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as personal hygiene, dressing, mobility, and toileting
Communicating respectfully and clearly with residents, families, and staff
Following safety, infection control, and confidentiality protocols at all times
Taking and recording blood pressure readings for residents with medication parameters
Reading blood glucose levels using a blood sugar reader
Assisting residents with insulin injections using an insulin pen under supervision
Emptying and monitoring Foley catheter urine bags
Preparing, making, and serving meals to residents
Observing and supporting nurses and caregivers to better understand nursing and long-term care work environments

Training:

The student will receive structured training and ongoing supervision to support their learning outcomes, including:
An initial orientation covering workplace expectations, safety protocols, infection control procedures, emergency procedures, and resident privacy
Hands-on training and demonstrations by nurses and senior caregivers for clinical and personal care tasks
Ongoing daily guidance while working alongside experienced staff
Regular weekly check-ins or meetings to review progress, answer questions, and provide mentorship and feedback
Continuous feedback during shifts to ensure safe practices and skill development

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) in a safe, respectful, and professional manner
Communicate clearly and compassionately with elderly residents, families, and healthcare staff
Follow infection control, safety, and privacy (confidentiality) procedures in a healthcare environment
Accurately take and record vital signs, including blood pressure and blood glucose readings
Assist residents with insulin administration using an insulin pen under supervision
Safely empty and monitor Foley catheter urine bags
Demonstrate an understanding of teamwork, responsibility, and professionalism in a nursing and long-term care setting
Gain insight into careers in nursing and long-term care
