Opportunity Summary 

The Teaching Assistant will support the instruction of an undergraduate psychology course by assisting with course management and student engagement. Responsibilities include helping maintain the course site in Canvas, responding to student inquiries, holding online office hours, monitoring discussion boards, and providing grading support under faculty supervision. Additional duties may involve preparing course materials, assisting with exam proctoring, tracking attendance/participation, and offering general academic support to students. Strong communication, organizational skills, and familiarity with Canvas are required.

Learning Outcomes  

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:

Demonstrate proficiency in managing a college-level course through Canvas, including posting materials, monitoring discussions, and assisting with grading tools.

Apply effective communication skills when responding to student inquiries and providing academic support in online office hours.

Practice professional collaboration by working closely with the course instructor to support course goals and student learning.

Develop organizational skills in handling multiple responsibilities such as grading, scheduling, and maintaining course records.

Apply principles of pedagogy and psychology to support student engagement and learning in a higher-education setting.

Training  

Provide structured orientation and hands-on demonstrations in Canvas, showing how to post materials, manage discussions, and use grading features.

Conduct regular check-ins and feedback sessions to guide the student in handling office hours, responding to student inquiries, and maintaining professionalism.

Model best practices in teaching and course management, allowing the student to shadow instructional tasks before gradually taking on independent responsibilities.

Tasks/Duties  

Maintaining and updating course content on Canvas, including posting lecture materials, assignments, and announcements.

Monitoring discussion boards and responding to student questions in a timely and professional manner.

Holding scheduled online office hours to provide academic support and clarify course materials.

Assisting with grading assignments and exams under faculty guidance, applying rubrics consistently and fairly.

Preparing supplemental course resources (e.g., study guides, review questions) to support student learning.

Tracking and recording attendance or participation data as directed by the instructor.

Participating in weekly check-ins or debriefs with the supervisor to reflect on teaching practices and areas for improvement.

Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in all student interactions and course-related tasks.
