Opportunity Summary 

Under the guidance of the Housing Director, housing casework interns will gain hands-on experience and a comprehensive understanding of the housing process for individuals seeking assistance. Interns will assist with client intakes, ensuring accurate collection of information, and help gather essential documents required for housing applications. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to observe and participate in case management meetings, learn about housing eligibility criteria, and develop skills in client communication and resource navigation. This role provides valuable insight into housing programs, advocacy, and the challenges faced by individuals in securing stable housing.

Tasks:

Conduct Client Intake Assessments: Assist in gathering and documenting client information to evaluate housing needs and eligibility for services.

Provide Resource Referrals: Research and connect clients to housing programs, rental assistance, shelters, and other relevant services.

Maintain Case Files and Documentation: Accurately record client interactions, update progress notes, and complete required documentation.

Advocate for Clients: Support clients in communicating with landlords, housing authorities, and service providers to address issues like lease agreements, rent negotiations, and eviction prevention.

Attend Team Meetings: Participate in staff meetings to discuss cases, share insights, and learn from team members' experiences.

Shadow Experienced Caseworkers: Observe and learn how professionals handle complex client situations, including crisis intervention and case resolution.

Build Knowledge of Housing Resources: Research and document local housing programs, rental markets, and assistance programs to expand the resource database.

Training:

During this placement, housing casework interns will receive comprehensive training to facilitate their learning outcomes, including:

General Orientation: Interns will participate in an initial orientation to familiarize them with the organization’s mission, structure, policies, and the specific role of the housing casework team.

Mentorship and Supervision: Weekly one-on-one meetings with a designated mentor or supervisor will provide ongoing guidance, feedback, and opportunities to reflect on their progress.

Job Shadowing: Interns will shadow experienced caseworkers to observe client interactions, case management techniques, and the navigation of housing systems in real-time.

Workshops and Skills Training: Interns will attend workshops or training sessions focused on critical skills such as client assessment, housing resources navigation, conflict resolution, and advocacy strategies.

Learning Outcome:

1. Understand Housing Resources and Programs: Gain knowledge of local, state, and federal housing resources, including affordable housing programs, rental assistance, and eviction prevention services.
2. Develop Case Management Skills: Learn to assess client needs, create individualized housing plans, and provide follow-up support to ensure clients achieve housing stability.
3. Strengthen Client Advocacy Abilities: Build skills to advocate for clients with landlords, housing authorities, and other service providers to address barriers and secure appropriate housing solutions.
