As an intern at Wilson Learning Center, individuals are trained to serve as volunteers supporting after-school teachers in a structured, Christian-leaning educational environment. Interns assist with classroom activities, provide homework support, and help keep students academically engaged. They may step in to supervise or lead activities when teachers are unavailable or during times of conflict, helping maintain a positive and respectful learning atmosphere. Interns are also responsible for assisting with student scheduling, ensuring that assigned students are organized, supported, and placed in appropriate academic activities. This role builds leadership, communication, and classroom management skills while contributing to the academic and personal development of students in grades K–8.
Tasks:
Under supervision intern will assist after-school teachers with academic instruction and homework support for students in grades K–8, including guiding students through assignments, reinforcing lesson concepts, and promoting effective study habits, as well as organizing and managing student schedules, track assigned students, and coordinate academic activities to ensure students receive appropriate and consistent support, and following organizational policies related to child safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct while working within a faith-based, nonprofit educational setting.
Training:
The training will begin with a mandatory general orientation that introduces interns to the organization’s mission, Christian-leaning values, policies, student safety procedures, and expectations for working with children in grades K–8nterns will participate in job shadowing experiences with experienced after-school teachers to observe classroom management strategies, instructional support methods, and daily routines. Interns will receive an overview and contextualization of their assigned tasks, including homework assistance, student supervision, conflict resolution, and scheduling responsibilities.Ongoing training will include regular check-ins and informal one-on-one mentoring with supervising staff to provide guidance, feedback, and reflection on performance. Interns will also receive hands-on practice through work samples, such as assisting with lesson activities, managing small groups, and organizing student schedules. Training materials and center guidelines will be provided to reinforce expectations, procedures, and best practices. This combination of orientation, mentorship, observation, and practical experience is designed to ensure interns are well-prepared to meet learning outcomes and effectively support students and staff.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic intership, the student will be able to demonstrate effective classroom support skills by assisting after-school teachers with instruction, homework guidance, and student supervision for grades K–8, independently step into a leadership or supervisory role when needed, including covering for absent staff and managing small groups of students, and develop professional communication and teamwork skills by collaborating with teachers, staff, students, and families within a nonprofit, faith-based educational setting.
