Opportunity Summary

Athletic trainer interns support the daily delivery of comprehensive sports medicine services while developing professional competence. They assist with injury prevention programs, patient intake, documentation, and clinical evaluations under the supervision of certified athletic trainers. Interns help implement rehabilitation plans, supervise therapeutic exercises, and apply taping, bracing, and modality treatments. They contribute to event and practice coverage, emergency action planning, and equipment safety checks. Through observation and hands-on practice, interns strengthen communication, clinical reasoning, and time-management skills, while learning ethical decision-making, interdisciplinary collaboration.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

By the end of the opportunity, students may acquire practical skills in injury assessment, rehabilitation progression, and therapeutic exercise instruction. They develop proficiency in taping, bracing, modality application, and documentation using electronic medical records. Students strengthen communication with athletes, coaches, and healthcare professionals while improving clinical reasoning and decision-making. Additional knowledge includes emergency response procedures, return-to-play considerations, time management, and professional conduct, preparing them for entry-level athletic training education and future clinical roles.

Opportunity Training

Mandated Reporter Training is not required. Students will receive structured onboarding and ongoing mentorship from certified athletic trainers. Training includes orientation to facility policies, emergency action plans, and documentation standards, as well as supervised instruction in injury evaluation, taping, bracing, modality use, and rehabilitation techniques. Students will also receive guidance on communication, professional conduct, risk management, and event coverage procedures. Hands-on practice is progressively increased as competence is demonstrated, ensuring responsibilities are performed safely and ethically.
