Criminal Justice Intern–Behavioral Health ServicesAt — New Found Life
This internship provides students with hands-on exposure to substance use disorder treatment in a licensed, Joint Commission–accredited behavioral health setting. Interns will observe and support clinical and programmatic services across residential and outpatient levels of care. Under supervision, students may assist with group activities, client engagement, documentation support, case management tasks, and program operations. The opportunity is designed to help students connect academic learning with real-world practice, develop professional communication skills, and gain an understanding of ethical standards, confidentiality, and evidence-based treatment approaches in behavioral health.
Students will gain foundational knowledge of substance use disorder treatment models, levels of care, and evidence-based practices. Skills developed may include professional communication, ethical decision-making, documentation basics, case coordination, client engagement techniques, and understanding of HIPAA and confidentiality standards. Students will also learn about interdisciplinary teamwork, boundaries in clinical settings, and the structure and operations of licensed behavioral health programs.
Students receive an on-site orientation covering organizational policies, safety procedures, confidentiality/HIPAA requirements, and professional conduct. Training includes shadowing experienced staff, role-specific instruction, and ongoing guidance related to assigned tasks. Mandated Reporter training can be provided if required. Additional training is tailored to the student’s academic program and level of involvement.
Students will be in a professional behavioral health setting. Safety orientation will be provided, including emergency procedures, infection control, and boundaries when interacting with clients. Students will not perform physical interventions or be placed in unsafe situations. No lifting or hazardous activities are required.
