The Communications & Advertising Intern at Bag of Cakes will support the bakery and coffee shop’s marketing efforts through hands-on involvement in digital promotion and brand development. The intern will oversee daily social media activity, including planning content calendars, publishing posts, and interacting with customers online. Responsibilities include creating visual and written promotional materials, capturing and editing photos and videos of products, and assisting with updates to the company’s website. The intern will contribute to the planning and execution of seasonal promotions and in-store campaigns, participate in creative brainstorming sessions, and track performance data to support marketing decisions. Throughout the internship, the student will work closely with management on advertising initiatives while maintaining discretion with business-related information.
Tasks:
The student will play an active role in advancing the bakery and coffee shop’s marketing strategy through high-level creative and analytical responsibilities. The student will independently develop and manage comprehensive content calendars aligned with business objectives, seasonal initiatives, and brand positioning. They will conceptualize, design, and produce original branded marketing materials using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, ensuring visual consistency and adherence to established brand standards.
The intern will lead digital content production, including professional product photography and short-form video creation, and will craft persuasive marketing copy tailored to target audience segments across multiple platforms. Responsibilities include assisting in the development and execution of integrated promotional campaigns, coordinating campaign timelines, and ensuring cohesive messaging across digital channels.
In addition, they will evaluate audience engagement data, interpret performance metrics, and generate strategic recommendations to optimize campaign effectiveness. The student will organize digital assets, maintain structured scheduling systems, meet established deadlines, and collaborate with management in planning, refining, and implementing advertising initiatives. All responsibilities require critical thinking, creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and professional handling of confidential business information.
Training:
Students will receive structured training throughout the internship to support the proposed learning outcomes. The placement will begin with a mandatory general orientation covering workplace expectations, company operations, confidentiality policies, communication standards, brand guidelines, and an overview of the bakery and coffee shop’s target audience and marketing goals. During the first two weeks, the student will participate in guided job shadowing with the manager and owner to observe current marketing workflows, social media management processes, and campaign planning strategies.
The student will receive hands-on skills training in Adobe Creative Cloud programs, specifically Photoshop and Illustrator, including guided practice projects and feedback on design execution. Training will also include instruction on content calendar development, professional scheduling practices, and platform-specific best practices for Instagram and other social media channels. The intern will be provided with examples of previous campaigns, branding materials, and performance reports to contextualize assigned tasks and better understand business strategy.
Weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings will be held to review progress, evaluate completed projects, provide constructive feedback, and discuss creative direction and professional development. The student will also participate in collaborative brainstorming sessions with peers and supervisors to strengthen teamwork and communication skills. Ongoing feedback will be provided on content quality, organization, time management, and professionalism to ensure continued growth throughout the semester.
Learning Outcome:
By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to develop and implement advertising strategies tailored to a small business, including planning and executing promotional campaigns across digital platforms. The student will gain hands-on experience creating professional marketing content such as photography, video, graphics, and written copy for social media and advertising purposes, while editing and producing digital media using industry-relevant tools, including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, which will be provided during the internship. In addition, the student will learn to manage and organize content schedules across social media platforms in a professional manner, analyze engagement metrics, and adjust strategies based on audience response. Through collaboration with supervisors and peers, the student will contribute creative ideas, work effectively within a team environment, participate in campaign development from concept to execution, and demonstrate professionalism, organization, and confidentiality when handling business-related information.
