During an internship at a police department, a student may learn how patrol operations work, including observing calls for service, assisting with report preparation, understanding radio communications, and gaining exposure to department policies, procedures, and community policing practices.
By the end of the internship, students will gain hands-on exposure to real-world law enforcement operations and develop practical skills that set them apart for future careers. Interns will build a strong understanding of patrol functions, report writing, and radio communications, while learning how officers apply laws, policies, and procedures in daily situations. They will also strengthen critical thinking, professionalism, and communication skills through interaction with officers, supervisors, and community members—providing valuable insight into the realities and rewards of a career in policing.
Students will receive structured orientation and on-the-job training designed to prepare them for a safe and successful internship. Training will include an overview of department policies and procedures, confidentiality and professional standards, basic radio and communication protocols, report writing fundamentals, and safety awareness. Interns will also receive guidance from experienced officers and supervisors throughout the internship, ensuring continuous learning, mentorship, and practical skill development.
The Student shall complete a background application. The site supervisor will contact the Student.
