Opportunity Summary 

The Web Programmer/Designer supports ASCENDtials and MDBA by keeping our digital presence current, accessible, and aligned with our mission. This role blends technical updates with creative design, ensuring that our website reflects our programs, markets, youth opportunities, and community impact. Interns in this role help maintain accurate information, improve user experience, and support outreach by making our online platforms clear, engaging, and easy to navigate. They work closely with the Publishing Team, Program Leads, and Market Managers to update pages, refresh visuals, remove outdated content, and build new sections that highlight our newest activities, events, and resources.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

1. Technical & Design Skills • Update website pages using the organization’s CMS or website builder • Apply basic design principles to improve layout, readability, and user flow • Optimize images, graphics, and page elements for performance • Build new pages for programs such as Food Distribution, Farmers’ Markets, Astronomy Club, and Youth Pathways • Ensure mobile‑friendly formatting and accessibility 2. Content Management Outcomes • Keep the website updated with current events, calendars, flyers, and announcements • Remove outdated content and replace it with accurate, timely information • Upload new program descriptions, vendor information, and youth opportunities • Maintain consistency in tone, style, and branding across all pages 3. Systems & Organization Outcomes • Create a clear structure for storing web assets (images, flyers, documents) • Maintain a version‑controlled workflow for updates • Document changes and create simple guides for future interns • Support the Publishing Team by coordinating updates across departments 4. Communication & Collaboration Outcomes • Work with program leads to gather accurate information for updates • Translate program needs into clear, user‑friendly web content • Communicate progress, challenges, and recommendations to the team • Participate in weekly check‑ins and contribute to team discussions 5. Problem‑Solving & UX Outcomes • Identify broken links, outdated pages, or confusing navigation • Recommend improvements to enhance user experience • Support the creation of a more intuitive site structure • Apply feedback to refine pages and improve clarity 6. Final Deliverables By the end of their hours, interns will have produced: • Updated website pages reflecting current programs and events • New pages for Food Distribution, Market Info, and other initiatives • A refreshed homepage or updated banners/graphics • A cleaned and organized media library • A simple “Website Update Guide” for future interns • A summary of improvements made and recommendations for next steps
