Opportunity Summary 

The Preschool Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging Montessori learning environment that supports children’s academic, social, emotional, and physical development. The teacher guides students through hands-on activities, fosters independence, and maintains a structured yet supportive classroom atmosphere aligned with Montessori philosophy. 

Tasks:

Student Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in planning and preparing developmentally appropriate Montessori lessons and classroom materials under mentor guidance.

Present small-group or individual lessons using Montessori materials while demonstrating proper technique and instructional sequencing.

Observe children’s academic, social, and behavioral development and record objective documentation for assessment purposes.
Support classroom management by guiding behavior using positive discipline and redirection strategies consistent with Montessori philosophy.
Maintain an organized, safe, and engaging learning environment, including material rotation, shelf setup, and sanitation procedures.
Collaborate with the lead teacher to adapt activities based on student needs, interests, and developmental levels.
Participate in weekly reflective meetings with a mentor to analyze teaching practices, receive feedback, and set professional goals.
Communicate professionally with staff regarding lesson plans, classroom observations, and student progress.
Assist with implementation of daily routines, transitions, and structured work cycles while ensuring compliance with licensing and safety standards.
Review curriculum materials, training resources, and child development literature to strengthen instructional practices.

Training:

Students participating in this placement will receive structured, hands-on training designed to support the successful achievement of their learning outcomes. Training will begin with a mandatory general orientation introducing the school’s mission, Montessori philosophy, workplace policies, health and safety procedures, and licensing requirements. Interns will also receive a classroom-specific orientation reviewing daily routines, lesson flow, supervision expectations, and professional conduct standards.
Throughout the placement, students will engage in job shadowing with experienced teachers to observe instructional techniques, classroom management strategies, lesson presentations, and child guidance approaches. Weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings will be held to review progress, discuss observations, provide feedback, and set professional goals. Interns will receive demonstrations of lessons and be provided with sample lesson plans, observation forms, and documentation templates to guide their work.
Students will participate in guided practice opportunities where they gradually assume responsibility for classroom tasks such as preparing materials, assisting with lessons, supervising activities, and documenting student progress. Additional training will include review of early childhood education literature and Montessori resources, reflective discussions, and competency-based evaluations to ensure skill development. Ongoing feedback and performance check-ins will be provided to support continuous growth and professional readiness.

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:

Apply health, safety, and licensing regulations in daily classroom routines and supervision practices.
