Opportunity Summary 

The intern at Sports X will assist in delivering structured, developmentally appropriate multi-sport programs for children ages 4–12, including soccer, flag football, basketball, and other recreational activities. The student will support their supervisor in implementing practice sessions, organizing age-appropriate drills, and fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive environment.

This internship requires approximately 2–10 hours per week, depending on program schedules and is flexible to accommodate the student's school schedule.

Tasks:

Key tasks include:
- Assist and lead structured multi-sport practice sessions, gradually assuming independent coaching responsibilities.
- Help design and conduct age-appropriate drills to promote participation, teamwork, and enjoyment.
- Apply coaching techniques to build player confidence, motivation, and positive engagement.
- Manage equipment setup and organization for sports sessions.
- Contribute to staff meetings and post-session debriefs to discuss sessions and receive feedback.
- Support communication with parents at pick up time and assist with supervisory tasks to develop leadership skills.

Training:

Training & Mentorship
The internship begins with an orientation covering Sports X’s philosophy, program expectations, safety procedures, and coaching standards. After the orientation the intern will attend and participate in a coaching workshop conducted by the Area Manager, where the intern will meet senior staff and learn games and coaching techniques through practice. The student will initially shadow their supervisor and then experienced coaches to observe effective practice management, communication, and leadership techniques.
As the internship progresses, the intern will lead portions of practice and eventually lead their own full sessions. Mentorship includes weekly check-ins, post-session debriefs, and participation in staff meetings. Supervised coaching responsibilities provide practical experience in leadership and professional communication within a youth sports context.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
- Plan and lead structured multi-sport practice sessions appropriate for elementary-aged children.
- Apply coaching strategies that foster player confidence, motivation, and positive engagement.
- Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and staff in a professional manner.
- Manage group dynamics to maintain a safe, organized, and supportive environment.
- Develop and implement age-appropriate drills that promote teamwork, participation, and enjoyment.
- Demonstrate leadership and supervisory skills, including planning, decision-making, and reflective practice.
