Mental Health Therapist InternAt — UC Davis Health Ctr - CAARE

Opportunity Summary 

Students will practice as mental health clinicians holding a caseload of weekly clients, be responsible for conducting comprehensive intake assessments, be responsible for completing required clinical documentation (e.g. treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries), be supervised by licensed clinical social workers, train in TF-CBT by nationally certified trainer and provide TF-CBT training to at least 2 clients (along with participating in TF-CBT didactic, groups supervision, and compassion fatigue seminar-making students eligible to TF-CBT certification after licensure), and have other training opportunities as available. Students will also collaborate with other service providers including psychiatrist, disordered eating specialist, substance use specialists, and infant mental health focused senior clinicians. Spanish-speaking interns have the opportunity to participate in group supervision held in Spanish.

1. to be proficient in conducting intake assessments, making diagnoses, developing treatment plans, providing clinical case management, and community based behavioral intervention. 2. developed cultural competency in assessing and treating a multicultural population. 3. to demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to conduct individual therapy for children and adolescents. 4. to demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to conduct empirically-supported treatment (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy). 5. to use knowledge of current research in the areas of intervention, assessment, and child maltreatment to guide assessment and treatment. 6. develop and refine skills in consulting with school and other systems involved in children’s and adolescents’ lives. 7. to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. 8. to become knowledgeable on issues concerning MSWs such as reporting laws, confidentiality, ethics, consultation, and supervision. 9. to demonstrate an ability to be self-reflective and make a realistic assessment of strengths and weaknesses as a developing professional in the field of clinical psychology.

Opportunity Training 

The first three weeks of internship will be dedicated to training students to complete tasks and responsibilities. Trainings include TF-CBT (2 days training along with group supervision, compassion fatigue, and TF-CBT didactic), training in policies and procedures, CPS/APS reporting training, Legal and Ethical issues related to mandated reporting, Medi-Cal Sacramento County documentation and SmartCare training, Suicide Risk assessment, Safety Planning and CAMS training, CANS training, Child Welfare Process, early identification of psychosis training, behavioral measures training, PCIT webcourse, CSEC webcourse, and shadowing/co-conducting assessment with senior clinician or supervisor opportunities.
