Students at First Steps Recovery should be aware of several health and safety considerations when working in detox and residential substance use treatment settings. These include potential exposure to clients experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms such as agitation, anxiety, and medical instability, which may require staff support and monitoring. There is also potential for unpredictable behavior due to intoxication, withdrawal, or co-occurring mental health conditions. Students should follow all site protocols related to infection control, including standard precautions and hygiene practices. They should maintain awareness of environmental safety procedures, including emergency response protocols, incident reporting, and evacuation procedures. Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries is essential to ensure both client and student safety. Students are expected to avoid being alone in high-risk situations when possible and to seek staff support if a client becomes escalated. Emotional safety is also a consideration, as students may be exposed to distressing client histories, including trauma and loss.
