Opportunity Summary 

Tax Services Interns serve as members of client service teams. Interns are staffed on engagements, similar to an Associate, and receive formal and on-the-job training to hone and develop their technical skills. Interns are part of an environment that broadens their interpersonal and technical skills and deepens their knowledge of tax implications in a variety of industries.  They will be given a mentor to guide them throughout the experience and have the opportunity to build their professional network through various events and activities.

Intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with research of tax laws, rules, and regulations and analyzing their application to specific situations resulting in drafting memorandums to defend decisions and/or outlining solutions to those issues;
  • Participating and aiding in select phases of tax compliance engagements, including individual, estate, gift and fiduciary tax returns;
  • Working as part of a team of problem solvers with vast consulting and industry experience, helping our clients solve complex business issues.
  • Proactively seeking guidance, clarification, and feedback;
  • Supporting select projects demonstrating creative thinking and individual initiative while working as a team member; and
  • Demonstrating flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks while exercising professional skepticism.

Tasks:

The intern will perform the following professional and pre-professional duties:
• Assist in preparing individual (Form 1040) and basic business tax returns.
• Organize and input client financial data into tax software systems.
• Review financial documents such as W-2s, 1099s, and general ledgers for accuracy.
• Conduct tax research on specific issues using IRS publications and online databases.
• Support tax planning projects by gathering relevant financial and regulatory information.
• Prepare workpapers and documentation to support tax return filings.
• Collaborate with team members to meet filing deadlines and ensure compliance standards.
• Participate in internal meetings and discussions related to client cases and tax strategies.

Training:

The intern will receive a structured onboarding and continuous training experience to support their development. Training will include:
• Initial group trainings during the first two weeks, including both local office sessions and national webcasts, covering company policies, workflow processes, confidentiality standards, and tax software systems.
• One-on-one trainings from senior tax staff on tax preparation procedures and research tools.
• Access to internal resources and guides related to tax regulations and best practices.
• Assignment of dedicated career advisor who will conduct regular weekly meetings to review progress, provide feedback, and offer ongoing guidance throughout the internship.
• End-of internship performance evaluations, consisting of feedback from professionals the intern has worked with to assess skill development, performance, and overall growth.

learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
• Prepare basic individual and business tax returns using professional tax software.
• Interpret and apply federal and state tax regulations to real-world scenarios.
• Analyze financial documents to identify relevant tax information and discrepancies.
• Conduct tax research using authoritative resources and summarize findings clearly.
• Demonstrate proficiency in Excel and other accounting tools used in tax preparation.
• Communicate professionally with team members regarding tax-related issues and deadlines.
• Understand the workflow and ethical responsibilities within a professional tax practice.
