Opportunity Summary 

Student athletic trainers will be responsible for assisting the sports medicine staff with the daily tasks associated with providing the appropriate medical coverage for all student athletes at the Los Angeles Harbor College. Daily responsibilities of a student athletic trainer may include assisting with treatments and rehabilitation, practice and game preparation, practice and game coverage and various tasks related to the operation of the sports medicine facilities.

Tasks:

• Preparation & Maintenance: Setting up water stations (ice/water), preparing taping tables, cleaning, and sanitizing the training room.
• Preventative Care: Applying preventative tape, bandages, and braces to athletes before, during, and after practices or games.
• Sideline Support: Assisting with emergency care, monitoring hydration, and providing \\eyes and ears\\ for ATCs during events.
• Rehabilitation Aid: Assisting in administering rehabilitation protocols, such as using ultrasound or guiding athletes through exercises.
• Administrative Tasks: Updating injury logs, tracking equipment inventory, and organizing medical records

Training:

Students start with an orientation and site tour. Students start with an observational period, learning to identify injuries and, under supervision, progress to hands-on techniques like ankle/wrist taping, wound care, and managing minor injuries. They work with various low and high-risk sports on our campus to gain experience in sports medicine. Students have a weekly evaluation of progression and competency review.

Learning Outcomes:

• Prevention and Health Promotion: Students will be able to identify risk factors, implement injury prevention strategies, and educate on wellness to minimize risk to physically active populations.
• Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis: Students will accurately perform clinical evaluations, use evidence-based assessment techniques, and formulate accurate diagnoses for acute and chronic injuries.
• Immediate and Emergency Care: Students will demonstrate proficiency in acute management of injuries, including emergency action plans, CPR/AED, and on-field assessment.
• Therapeutic Intervention: Students will design, implement, and adjust comprehensive rehabilitation programs using manual therapies, modalities, and exercises to optimize patient outcomes.
• Healthcare Administration and Professionalism: Students will demonstrate ethical behavior, adhere to regulatory standards, manage insurance/documentation, and engage in interprofessional, patient-centered communication
