Opportunity Summary 

As a Laboratory Assistant at Monterey Bay Analytical Services students will have the opportunity to gain essential skills working in a laboratory setting through experiential learning. Students will be exposed to water analysis techniques for microbiological, chemical, and physical analyses. They will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience assisting analysts. Students will also gain a working knowledge of policies regarding drinking water and waste water. This opportunity is ideal for students looking to work in natural resource management or a in a chemical or microbiological laboratory. Interns who excel may be offered a position upon graduation.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Practical applications of the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, National Pollution discharge Elimination System, and Central Coast Agriculture Waiver Proper laboratory procedures in microbiological, physical, and chemical analyses Preparation of reagents and standards Familiarity with analytical instrumentation General Laboratory safety Acceptable drinking limits and mandatory notification rules Other outcomes will be defined in collaboration with the student

Opportunity Training 

Safety training and orientation will be given to students on their first week. More training and guidance will be provided as students progress in their skills.
