Art InternAt — Neon Hemlock

Opportunity Summary 

Art internships are intended for qualified applicants seeking hands-on experience in illustration—especially related to publishing. Ideal candidates will have an excellent visual eye, a strong background in art and design, and an avid interest in literature.

The Art intern works closely with the Publisher to maintain Neon Hemlock’s high visual standards and established book design brand. Responsibilities may include: sketching, thumbnailing and digitally painting illustrations for manuscripts, stories, and promotional material; presenting artwork ideas for and illustrating icon, spot, and full-page illustrations; designing brochures, flyers, posters, e-blasts, advertisements, and other promotional materials; researching for various projects; providing general Production support such as data entry, filing, scanning, database maintenance and upkeep, and other administrative duties; and providing general office support and upkeep as needed.

Tasks:

Key Responsibilities

- Create visual art pieces and/or drawings that address contemporary speculative and literary work

- Develop series of works that augment literary work and contribute to artistic vision

- Document your creative process and artistic evolution

- Collaborate with editors and authors

- Participate in virtual discussions about art's role in social movements

- Contribute to online magazine and other digital formats

- Engage with literary communities to understand market's needs firsthand

Training: 

Initial General employer orientation (mandatory), weekly scheduled one-on-one mentor meetings, job shadowing, workshops/skills training, introductions to other artists in field, overview/contextualization of assigned tasks, feedback and personalized support.

Learning Outcomes:

• Build a professional portfolio with speculative-focused pieces
• Develop cohesive visual branding materials according to organizational standards.
• Consult with art directors and project managers to illustrate creative assets for literary publications.
• Gain experience in organizational management and planning
